My First Bad Couponing Experience

I am still fuming from my first bad experience with coupons.  It was at the Target store in Manalapan, NJ.

This afternoon I prepped for my trip.  I had a few good deals planned and a couple great ones.  I printed my Target coupons from the Target website and clipped my manufacturer's coupons just as I have many times before.

I show up at the Target around 5:00 with Lucas in tow.  I spent about an hour gathering up the deals I had planned and browsing throug the children's clearance clothes.

I get to the register and the cashier scans all my coupons and they go through without a problem.  I watched as my $37 total dropped dramatically to a mere $16.  As I take out my Target gift card to pay with a manager swoops in and grabs the coupons from the cashier's hand.

To make an extremely long story short, two of the managers and the security guard accused me of coupon fraud.  They claimed my Target coupons were FAKE.  I told them I printed them that morning from the website and the cashier told the manager that the coupons went through OK.

I ended up leaving the store and did not purchase anything.  The manager, was very rude and insisted that my coupons were fake.  I assure you that they were not.

When I got home I called the corporate office.  After being on hold for 20 minutes and being passed from employee ro employee, I finally encountered a helpful person.

She is looking into the problem.  I faxed her a copy of the coupons that the manager would not accept.  She took the manager's name and my contact information.  While I am waiting to hear back from her she was sending me some vouchers for $ off my next purchse.

So what do I expect to happen?  I haven't figured that out yet.  I know that I wanted Target to know that the manager was accusing me of "stealing."  Who knows what will happen?  I will keep you posted.

  1. Ahh! They must've been keeping an eye out for you, since your deals are so incredible! This is kinda funny since obviously you didn't do anything wrong, and I can't wait to see it resolved.

  2. How rude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was at Target in Milltown today and I can't believe that happened to you. I'm so sorry. I don't like the one in Manalapan because it's sloppy and messy. How awful. Rude people are so mean!

  3. Sorry you had such a bad experience! I haven't gotten into Target couponing yet, but hae had a rough time with their customer service in the past for other reasons.

I did have a manager at ShopRite accuse me of coupon fraud once, but I very firmly told her she was mistaken, that I played fair and to take a closer look at my coupons. She apologized and that was my closest call to a coupon disaster so far.

Way to go following up with corporate! Hopefully your Target will now become more coupon friendly for all of us because of your efforts!
